About Me - Fawkes Conibear
Le Vampire

My name is Fawkes Conibear and I am an amateur photographer. I love to focus on bright colours and the objects that help make this world a little more fun. That is why I often find myself drawn to amusement parks and playgrounds. Whether the vibrant paint is aimed at children running around on gravel or adults seeking high-speed thrills I enjoy photographing the exciting things in life.

When I was just shy of 19 I left home to attend the University of Ottawa. While I initially got accepted to pursue a joint honours degree in psychology and linguistics it's not a world I stayed in long. Entranced by the new people and ideas I had been introduced to during my first year I then switched into a Major in Aboriginal Studies and a minor in Women's Studies. I wanted to make a difference in the world.

While I still hope to make a difference I quickly became overwhelmed by the magnitude of the issues faced by the marginalised communities I was studying. Depression and a checkered academic career - while at university I achieved every grade imaginable, from A's to F's - forced me to reconsider where I was focusing my energy, and money. After two and a half years of working towards a bachelor's degree, I decided to drop-out and go to culinary school.

With little real-world experience, I decided to dive further into the one industry I had enjoyed working in. I applied to the Algonquin College Culinary Management program in January of 2012 and started that fall. I made the Dean's list all four semesters and graduated with Honours two years later. I have been working in the food service industry ever since.

However, now I feel it is time to change gears again. Long hours in hot rooms lit only by fluorescent bulbs making food for people I will never meet is not as fun as it used to be. This is why I have turned to photography: fresh air, new experiences, and a desire to be my own boss.

So, here I am, running head first into a new world. As one of my favourite teachers likes to say "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!" - Miss Frizzle, The Magic School Bus
